Officially named "Thunderbolt II", the A-10 looks like a throwback to the early post Word War II jets. The unique design was a result of the formula "Form follows function". The unusual placement of the engines, its sharp, angular lines distinctively chunky shape led to the now common nickname "Warthog". The A-10 is actually a flying tank. It is so strong it can withstand incredible punishment and many have safely returned from a mission with severe damage, including the loss of half the tail, or large chunks of wing missing.
