"Together with the Me 109 the Spitfire is the best-known aircraft of World War II. It was built in numerous variants until long after the end of the war with a total build of over 22,500. The Merlin 12-cylinder engine developed for the Spitfire started with 1,175 hp - later it was over 1,720 hp - and it was so outstanding that it was built under licence in the USA. At the beginning of the Second World War the RAF already had the Spitfire Mk. 1 in its fighter squadrons.
